Lando gets 2nd win, Haas held captive by Mazepin, Sargeant out at Williams?

The F1x

The In Lap

After a large shunt in FP3, Logan Sargeant was unable to get his car repaired in time for qualifying, which might be the final nail in the coffin for his F1 career.

Lewis and Carlos both went out in Q2, which was the first big surprise of the session. Lando claimed P1, which was a decent bit ahead of Verstappen, who claimed P2 to start Sunday’s race.

After qualifying, there were two pieces of disciplinary action taken:

Lewis Hamilton’s qualifying result went from bad to worse as he was hit with a 3-place grid penalty for impeding Perez during Q1.

Alex Albon was handed a disqualification from the qualifying session due to an illegal floor found on the Williams. He started from the back of the grid on Sunday after putting in a great qualifying performance that should have seen him start P8!

Lando got his 2nd career win (it feels like he should have way more than that). He joins only Max and Lewis as drivers who have won more than one race this season.

I’m sure we were all a little worried when Lando crawled off the line and Verstappen had already overtaken him before the first turn. Lando continues to have bad starts, which he will need to work on.

This was the largest margin of victory (22.896 seconds) this season and the largest margin of victory in some time.

70 points separate Max and Lando.

Let's play a hypothetical scenario where Lando wins every remaining race and Verstappen finishes P2. Max would still win the championship by 7 points… 7 points is what Lando gave up when Oscar passed him for the win in Hungary.

Now, that doesn’t account for fastest lap points, and predicting the same 1-2 for the rest of the season would be quite a bet to make.

30 points separate McLaren and the Red Bulls in the Constructors’ Championship, which looks more and more like McLaren’s to win.

There were no yellow flags, safety cars, or retirements again this week. It feels like this has been happening more lately, and we haven’t had many on-track accidents during the races.

Overheard in the Paddock

Prior to the race weekend starting it was being reported that Haas was being put under legal action by previous title sponsor Uralkali. Uralkali was the Russian title sponsor in 2021 that was removed during the sanctions against Russian organizations when the war began.

The Swiss arbitration court concluded that while Haas had the right to remove the title sponsor, they were required to repay part of the money (approximately $9 million).

This amount had to be paid before Haas' assets were allowed to leave the Netherlands. As of the latest update, the Haas garage has been permitted to leave Zandvoort and is on its way to Monza!

Lawson or Schumacher may be in at Williams soon on a loan to replace Logan Sargeant. After the crash in FP3 which made it so the Williams driver could not participate in Qualifying it is being reported that James Vowles is exploring these options and has spoken with Red Bull and Mercedes representatives, with Toto saying he would “very much hope“ to see Mick get that shot.

Antonelli will not be loaned according to Toto, but he will be in FP1 Mercedes at Monza this next week!
