McLaren on track

The 2025 Formula 1 launch season is officially underway, and McLaren has set the tone with an enigmatic reveal of its MCL39. The reigning Constructors' Champions opted for a stealthy approach, releasing only distant images of their new challenger wrapped in a striking papaya-and-black dazzle camo livery. The result? A visually elusive first glimpse that hides key aerodynamic details and leaves plenty to the imagination.

Design Continuity & Evolution: While the MCL39 carries over familiar elements from its predecessor, the MCL38, subtle refinements suggest a careful evolution rather than a radical overhaul. Notably, the front and rear wings appear similar to last season’s final configuration.

Suspension Tweaks: McLaren has retained its pull-rod front suspension but with an altered upper wishbone mounting, which is now positioned even lower. This change aims to minimize aerodynamic disruption under braking and maintain stable airflow to the floor. The push-rod rear suspension remains unchanged.

Aerodynamic Enhancements: One of the most visible differences is an elliptical air intake above the driver’s head, replacing McLaren’s traditional squared design. The engine cover is slightly wider to accommodate this, while the sidepod area looks marginally sleeker than before.

Optimizing Performance: The MCL39’s design adjustments are intended to enhance long-run consistency and tire management over a race distance—an area McLaren has been targeting for improvement.

News From The Week

Bottas and Perez vie for Cadillac seat

As the 2026 Formula 1 season approaches, former F1 drivers Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas are actively pursuing avenues to rejoin the grid. Perez is reportedly in discussions with Cadillac, which plans to debut in F1 in 2026, while Bottas, currently serving as a reserve driver for Mercedes, is open to potential race seats that may arise.

Sergio Perez's Prospective Return:

Cadillac Collaboration: After departing from Red Bull, Perez is targeting a comeback with Cadillac in 2026. The American manufacturer aims to enter F1 as an 11th team and is seeking experienced drivers to lead its inaugural campaign.

Strategic Driver Line-Up: Cadillac plans to pair a seasoned driver with a promising American talent, with IndyCar's Colton Herta being a potential candidate. Perez's experience could provide valuable insights for the team's debut.

Valtteri Bottas's Future Plans:

Mercedes Reserve Role: After concluding his tenure with Sauber, Bottas has returned to Mercedes as a reserve driver for the 2025 season. He believes there is a mutual understanding with Mercedes that would allow him to pursue external race opportunities should they arise.

Potential Opportunities: Bottas has engaged in preliminary discussions with Cadillac, indicating his interest in securing a race seat upon their F1 debut in 2026. He remains committed to his reserve duties at Mercedes while exploring future possibilities

Tag Heuer x Monaco GP

TAG Heuer has made history by becoming the first-ever title partner of the Monaco Grand Prix, marking a significant milestone in Formula 1's 75th anniversary year. This partnership introduces the race as the "Formula 1 TAG Heuer Grand Prix de Monaco 2025," reflecting TAG Heuer's longstanding association with the sport and the principality.

Key Details:

Since its inception in 1950, the Monaco Grand Prix has not had a title sponsor. TAG Heuer's involvement as the first title partner underscores the brand's deep-rooted connection to the event and the sport.

TAG Heuer has been the official timekeeper of Formula 1 since 2025, succeeding Rolex. The brand has a rich history in motorsport, with a legacy of wins by iconic drivers such as Niki Lauda, Ayrton Senna, Lewis Hamilton, and Max Verstappen, all of whom have worn TAG Heuer timepieces.

As part of the partnership, TAG Heuer will have prominent trackside placements around the Monaco circuit, enhancing the event's atmosphere. A special logo has been created to commemorate this historic collaboration, and TAG Heuer Monaco clocks will be displayed throughout the paddock, marking a new fixture for Formula 1 in 2025.

Stefano Domenicali, President & CEO of Formula 1: "This is a truly fantastic moment in Formula 1 history as TAG Heuer becomes the first-ever Title Partner of the Grand Prix de Monaco, a circuit that featured in the sport’s very first season in 1950, and with which we mark our 75th anniversary this year."

Antoine Pin, CEO of TAG Heuer: "Monaco is truly our spiritual home, encapsulating much of what we stand for at TAG Heuer. The spirit of competition, the challenging street course that rewards those who show the greatest mental resilience and physical strength, a place where drivers push themselves to achieve their absolute best."

Williams new title sponsor

Williams Racing has secured a landmark title sponsorship agreement with Australian software company Atlassian, marking the most significant partnership in the team's 48-year history. Starting from the 2025 Formula 1 season, the team will compete under the name "Atlassian Williams Racing."

Comprehensive Partnership: Beyond serving as the title sponsor, Atlassian becomes Williams' Official Technology Partner and Official Collaboration Software Partner. This collaboration aims to enhance the team's operations through advanced digital tools and foster improved teamwork and innovation.

Brand Integration: Atlassian's branding will feature prominently on the FW47 car. The logo will also be displayed on drivers' race suits, team apparel, and throughout the team's facilities both trackside and at their Grove headquarters.'

James Vowles, Team Principal of Williams Racing: "I am delighted to welcome Atlassian into Formula 1 and our evolution into Atlassian Williams Racing. Attracting a title partnership of this size and significance is a momentous day in our team’s illustrious history and a major milestone in our comeback transformation."

Mike Cannon-Brookes, Co-CEO and Co-Founder of Atlassian: "We’re incredibly excited to partner with Williams Racing, a team that shares our passion for technology, innovation, and high performance. Together, we aim to push the boundaries of what’s possible in Formula 1."

F1 to Africa causing controversy

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has called on Formula 1 to halt discussions regarding the proposed Rwanda Grand Prix. DRC officials express concerns over regional tensions and the potential for the event to exacerbate existing conflicts. They emphasize the importance of considering the broader implications of hosting such an event in a region with a complex political landscape. Formula 1 has yet to respond to these concerns.

Key Points:

Regional Tensions: The DRC highlights ongoing disputes in the Great Lakes region and fears that a high-profile event like a Grand Prix could inflame these issues.

Political Implications: Hosting an international event in Rwanda may be seen as an endorsement of the current Rwandan administration, which has been a point of contention in regional politics.

Call for Caution: The DRC urges Formula 1 to carefully assess the potential impact of the race on regional stability and to engage with all relevant stakeholders before proceeding.
