News From The Week
Even in a week with no racing, there was no shortage of news stories to discuss. From teams and organizations making changes in leadership positions, to new brand deals in F1, and drivers choosing to spend their week off in unique ways, there’s plenty to cover!
Alpine using Mercedes Power Unit
Alpine have announced that from 2026 onward they will be using Mercedes power units and gearboxes. This deal is good until at least 2030.
F1 Academy
It was announced this week that the F1 Academy winner will be receiving a fully funded GB3 in 2025 as part of their awards for winning.
This seat will be with Rodin Motorsport.

Leadership changes around F1
Even during the off weeks of F1, it seems no job is safe. Over the past week, we’ve seen three significant job changes: one at the team level and two in high-level leadership positions at the FIA and Liberty Media.
Aston Martin Technical Director, Dan Fallows, to step down after a disappointing season but will remain with the team in another role.
Niels Wittich has left his role as F1 race director with immediate effect. He will be replaced by Rui Marques, who has previously served as the F2 and F3 Race Director. Reports indicate that this move was more of a firing than a resignation. There has been significant coverage recently on inconsistencies in the handling of red and yellow flags, as well as driver penalties, so it’s not entirely surprising that a change was made. What was unexpected, however, was the decision to make this change with only three races left in the season.
Rui Marques will take on this role starting with the Las Vegas GP next week.
Liberty Media CEO Greg Maffei will be stepping down from his role at the end of the year after not getting a new contract. He is said to be staying on as an advisor.
New cooling for drivers
With the increased number of races in hot and humid climates like Singapore and Qatar, driver safety in regards to temperature control has become a point for discussion.
Next year drivers will now have access to a new “driver cooling kit” in these extreme conditions to avoid heat related medical concerns.
In recent years drivers have complained of faintness, vomiting, and nausea at these race venues.
Monaco
The Monaco Grand Prix, loved by some and loathed by others, has renewed its contract and will remain on the F1 calendar until 2031.

Fred Vasseur thinks teams could sandbag
With next year’s season being the last before the major rules changes, and with how close multiple teams are in terms of performance this year, F1 fans are so excited for a season that could be unpredictable.
Ferrari team boss Fred Vasseur stated last week that he thinks some of the teams that are not fighting for the championship might scrap some of their performance or development to get more wind tunnel testing time to put themselves in a better position for 2026.
There is a sliding scale based on where you finish in the constructors standings and how much wind time you are allocated. The further down you finish the more time you get.

What were the drivers up to?
Valtteri Bottas Villa Ironman
If anyone is still under the impression that F1 drivers are not athletes, look no further than Valtteri Bottas.
Bottas has made quite a name for himself in the gravel cycling world over the past couple of years. He has competed in—and performed very well at—some of the most well-known gravel races. And if you want to follow his training, he posts all of his workouts on Strava!
During the current three-week break, while some drivers might choose to take it easy, relax, and reset, Bottas decided to tackle a full Ironman at the Turks & Caicos villa where he and his girlfriend, Tiffany Cromwell, were staying.
